A frustrating problem solved...

Normally I do blog posts first thing in the morning. But on Wednesday the 21st we will be on the road very early, heading for the coastal town of Lunenburg where we are getting on a boat and going deep sea fishing for four hours or so.

This will be grandson Cameron's belated 13th birthday present from us.

So... no blog post tomorrow morning, but we should have some good fishing stories to tell when we get back!

I had a bit of a frustrating day yesterday. Last week, I had replaced one of the cable guides inside Igor's main entrance side door. Everything seemed fine until a few days later when the door refused to open from the outside. I took it apart again, and it needed a new door handle. I didn't think much of it, and went ahead and ordered a new door handle for $20 or so.

I went to change the door handle, and what should have been a half hour job turned into an all afternoon job. The cable going from the handle to the latch didn't seem right. It was as if it wasn't long enough by 1/8" or so. Now, these cables could possibly stretch... but they would never shrink.

I couldn't figure it out, and I ended up removing the entire assembly.

Yes, I can put it all back together.

The door is looking pretty bare!

I just couldn't figure it out. I almost got frustrated enough that I was going to order a whole new latch and cable assembly. But sitting there staring at it for the tenth time, I noticed that the cable guide I had installed last week wasn't fully seated... by like an eighth of an inch or so. But it was an eighth of an inch that made a difference. And, it was that error that caused the old door handle to break after the fact.

Anyhow, I got it figured out, and learned a lesson at the same time.

This morning I took Cameron and his friend fishing again.

It's a really pretty spot.

I went for a stroll on the trail while the boys fished.

Looking back at the boys.

"Early to bed, early to rise" is the theme for the next 12 hours. Gotta be on the road by 6:30am or so.

  1. No way could I have tackled that much less had the patience for it. It is unbelievable what good condition the van is in, structurally speaking. Have you found any rust?

    1. I don't know how Kevin figures out how all these things work but he sure gets it right. I can contest that he was getting pretty frustrated and had to step back and take a small break before going back to it and having another look. Seems like that break was what he needed in order refocus himself on the task at hand.

Igor is in very good condition. No rust to speak of, a couple of teeny issues but nothing important and nothing that affects the structure of the van.
