Well that was a good day!

This area around Campbellton is really nice. We were really enjoying our time with Denis and Marjolaine, and they said we were welcome to stay another night so that they could take the time to properly show us around the area.

Denis has had a hobby of building hand made cedar strip canoes that are easier to navigate the shallow waters of the nearby Restigouche River. And he offered to take us for a boat ride on the river!

We were all a little unsure about the weather. It was pretty chilly, and they were only calling for a high around 17C (63F), and being out of the water would feel cooler, and of course there is a strong breeze when you're actually moving along on the boat. But, we put on layers of clothing, and even got out our winter hats and we all made a decision to go for it. And we're glad we did!

Beautiful cedar strip canoe.

Denis has built 12 of these boats. Each one takes him about three months. It has a 25hp jet engine without a propeller because it makes it easier to navigate the shallow Restigouche River.

Ussie on the water!

Heading up the river.

The Restigouche River forms a lot of the border between New Brunswick and Quebec. The river runs about 200 kms (120 miles) and is very popular for Atlantic salmon fishing during the spring.

Looking back at Campbellton and Sugarloaf Mountain.
(We are going to climb that hill this morning!)

The river is extremely clear.

We came across a bald eagle!

We were able to get fairly close to it!

Putting my feet up and enjoying the ride.

I took a video for you...

We stopped on the shoreline for a break.

What a fun time that was! Back at the truck, we loaded the boat up on the trailer and parked it in town while we hopped in their other vehicle and went for a little tour. Ruth and I will be going back into town on our own this morning, so we'll show you more photos tomorrow.

There is a beautiful statue of Sam the Salmon.

Back at the house where Igor has been parked.

Denis and Marjolaine have 80 acres of woodlot property behind their home. After dinner, we went for a walk in the woods...

There was a spectacular sunset last night that looked like the sky was on fire!

We had a great time with Denis and Marjolaine. Thanks for your hospitality! They gave us some ideas of places to hike this morning, and gave us a different route to take up to the St. Lawrence River. We are also going to be stopping at Gaspesie National Park to do some more hiking!

  1. Wow, what a sunset! The canoe ride sounded fun (though a bit chilly for this southerner). Gorgeous woods!

    1. It was a great sunset, too bad that we couldn't have taken it at a prettier location rather than by the highway like that though.

The canoe ride was wonderful and it wasn't as cold as it looked but yes, considering you are a southerner, it probably would have been a bit chilly for you.
