Indian summer

We're having a bit of an end of season heat wave here in the Ottawa area. Temperature got up to 23C (73F) yesterday, so we took a drive down to the village of Burritt's Rapids to go for a walk.

Burritt's Rapids is along the route of the Rideau Canal.

Oh, but before we get to that, Happy Halloween!

They had a pumpkin decorating contest at my mom's building, and this was the winning entry.

We have the candies ready, in the hopes we get a few kids coming by this evening. On the other hand, hopefully there will be leftovers, because some of the candy is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups... my favorite!

The village of Burritt's Rapids is on the Rideau River, and there is a dam and lock system there that is part of the Rideau Canal that was completed in 1832.

Burritt's Rapids is one of the oldest communities in the area.

There is an operational swing bridge that was built in 1890.

Uh oh.

We specifically drove to Burritt's Rapids in order to go for a hike on this trail. We decided to hop the barrier and go see why it's closed. Sure enough, as we expected, there was absolutely nothing going on. You could see where they had recently trimmed back some bushes on either side of the trail, but there was absolutely nobody working while we were there, and we walked right to the end.

The Rideau River.

The trail is 4 kms if you do the entire route.

The dam has been raised, cutting off the water supply to the canal for the winter.

A nice spot to sit and relax.

Back in the village, people are ready for Halloween.

This old church is now someone's home.

The opposite end of the trail ends at the lock.

Looking north towards Ottawa.

There is only one lock at Burritt's Rapids.

Today will be the second and final day of our Indian summer. Highs forecast to reach 23C (73F) again today, but with a lot more sunshine.
