Out with the old, and in with the new!

Yesterday, I took a break from the furnace installation to do the fridge installation.

Igor's 31 year old Dometic propane/120VAC fridge was still working, but it wouldn't keep a stable temperature. Especially on propane, which we would have been using most of the time. Given that we are setting Igor up for an extended trip to Mexico and south of Mexico, we wanted something that didn't use propane, and something that we were more confident in.

With our new lithium batteries, we have excess 12 volt electricity. So we bought a new Nova Kool R4500 12VDC refrigerator.

I belong to a forum of B190 owners, and this fridge is the closest direct fit fridge for Igor. Other people have said that it's a relatively easy installation, and it was!

Old fridge being removed.

Once the propane line was disconnected and plugged, and the front mounting screws removed, it just slid right out.

It was pretty dirty in there. Of course the fridge had been there for 31 years!

Empty space.

Old fridge out.

New fridge ready to go in!

That was pretty easy!

The new fridge is also slightly larger.

The only adaptations necessary were a couple of 1.5" blocks underneath, and I have to fill a gap at the bottom, which I will do with spray foam insulation. I re-routed the 12 gauge wires that ran to the old furnace fan, and that easily supplies enough power for the fridge. Connected up the two wires, and turned the dial inside, and it fired right up. It took one hour to cool down to 3C (37F), although it was pretty chilly outside already. And it took hardly any electricity to do so.

I think we're really going to like this fridge!
