A great day in Mexico

I'm thinking that there will be a few blog posts with that title this winter!

We hung out at the house for the morning, and then early afternoon we set off to the Cola de Caballo waterfalls. But we had a stop to make along the way.

The other day, the screen on my laptop died. And then, it a totally unrelated incident, somehow I cracked the screen. I don't remember dropping it or otherwise causing it any stress, but there it was... cracked!

This is one of the two laptops that we bought in Norway two and a half years ago. So, I am writing this blog post on Ruth's laptop.

We found a laptop repair place nearby and the guy thought he had a screen in stock. It would have cost about 2000 pesos ($138 CAD, $98 USD) to do the repair, which would have been great. So we left it with him.

Meanwhile, we got a call back from the mechanic regarding Igor. The mechanic in Ottawa had said that the rear wheel cylinders needed replacing, as well as both drums and shoes. The Canadian mechanic had wanted over $2,000 CAD to do the job, which is why we decided to put it off until Mexico. But the Mexican mechanic said that yes, the two wheel cylinders needed replacing, but that the drums were fine, although one could use turning, and the pads were good for quite a few more miles yet.

So he replaced the wheel cylinders and brake fluid, and bled the system. The brakes are now perfect, for a total cost of 1,250 pesos ($86 CAD, $61 USD). That's FAR better than two thousand!

Ruth, saying hi to a horse.

On the path up to the waterfall.

At the base of the Cola de Caballo waterfall.

Freya, Bjorn, and Ruth.

Cola de Caballo means "Horse Tail" Waterfall.

Chris had brought Ruth and I up to this waterfall the first time we met in 2009.

Have I mentioned how happy we are to be back in Mexico?

Pretty butterfly.

And another one.

We left the waterfall, and headed down to the lake.

Had a message from the laptop guy saying that the screen he had in stock was not the right one, and the proper one would have to be ordered and was going to be over double what he had thought. At this point, I think I will just buy a new laptop. With Black Friday sales starting this weekend, I should be able to get a deal on something. A little disappointed that I only got two and a half years out of the last one, but such is life.

The lake level had been almost dry this past summer.
Now, it's too high!

Ducks!

Beautiful day in Mexico!

The water is high.

Well, I guess he wanted a waterfront spot!

The malecon.

We went and picked up Igor, and paid the bill. The brakes are the best they have been since we bought him, and are working totally normal. Hopefully no more problems in that department.

Then we went and picked up the laptop. The guy said that if I got a new one, to come back and he would transfer all my data over.

Before happy hour, we walked up to the main road and just checked out some of the shops.

It's common in this area to buy a cup of elotes (corn) with different toppings.
Freya bought one.

The elotes guy!

What a fun day we had! Chris made a great chicken dinner for us, and we sat around in the evening and solved all the world's problems!

  1. Wow, what a deal on that brake work! You were so smart to wait until Igor got to Mexico to do that. Really, that more than makes up for having to buy a new laptop. Amazing to see the high water, since I keep reading about drought in Mexico! Love the photo of you and Ruth together. Glad you are enjoying Mexico already!

    1. It really was a great deal and Kevin is very happy with them, he says they have never felt better. And yeah, it does sort of make up for the price of a new laptop but he is disappointed about having to buy a new laptop in the first place. Chris and Juan say that everyone in the area is so happy so see the lake so full, it had been a very dry summer!
