We decided to drive for half an hour and use the engine heat to warm us up. By the time we parked up for breakfast, the sun was shining and the temperature headed up into the 20's (70's).
We crossed the border from the state of Guanajuato to the state of Queretaro.
Into the city of Queretaro.
Queretaro is a modern city with a lot of interesting new buildings.
I was going to take the bypass road that avoids the central area, but it was a Sunday morning, and Google Maps was telling me that there was no traffic congestion anywhere along our route, so I took the chance and drove right into town.
It turned out to be perfectly fine.
Hardly any traffic at all.
Our morning destination was the El Cerrito Pyramid in Queretaro.
You can see it in the distance.
We had tried to visit this pyramid back in January 2016, but we hadn't realized at the time that it is closed on Monday and Tuesday. This time, we arrived on Sunday, and it is open... and even better, it is free on Sundays!
The El Cerrito Pyramid.
Mural at the entrance.
The have a small, but interesting museum on site.
Stone carvings that had been found on the site.
Huge cacti grow on the stone altars.
Two side of the pyramid have been cleared of brush.
The other two sides remain natural.
The original platform at the top is long gone. The structure up there now is a fort that was built in the 1700's and was later used as a house by the owner of the private property up until the late 1800's.
There's not really that much to see at the pyramid itself. You're not allowed to climb on it, or even walk around the base of it. Good things it was free!
Afterwards, we went for a walk outside the perimeter to see if we could get a decent view of the other side.

The opposite side.
This is what a pyramid looks like when it has not been excavated!
After lunch it was time to visit with Adrian and his family.
We stayed with Adrian for three nights way back in 2012 when we visited Mexico City. We kept in touch through facebook over the years, but we were never at the same place at the same time to meet up again. He was a bachelor back then with a decent job and he spent most of his money on travel.
Now, he is married to Brenda, and she has a 13 year old son from a previous relationship. They only got married a year ago, so he has had quite a change in lifestyle! Now, they are living in Queretaro and we were excited to get together again.
Adrian with their dog Nina.
We also met Brenda and her son Roman, and we sat and got reacquainted for a couple of hours. Then we went out for some dinner to a popular brew pub.
Statue along the way.
We drove alongside the huge Queretaro aqueduct for a while.
The huge supports go into the ground as deep as they are high.
Brenda and Ruth.
Ruth and I each had a big plate of Carne en su Jugo.
Kevin, Ruth, Adrian, Roman, and Brenda.
We are parked in the gated visitors parking of the condo project where they live. Had a totally peaceful night's sleep, and Brenda has invited us to use their shower and laundry facilities, so we'll get cleaned up and then head closer to Valle de Bravo.
