Next stop, Playa del Carmen!

We headed back into town yesterday to try and do something with Ruth's shoes. Also, Sunday is market day in Valle de Bravo, and while we didn't need anything because we won't be here for the next week, we always enjoy wandering around the market.

So anyhow, we made it to the place we bought Ruth's shoes... and the door was locked. They took our money and ran!

So, what to do? We decided to try to buy some good quality insoles. This should at least make them comfortable to wear, although I'd be surprised if they last more than a couple of months.

Lesson learned... we are not buying anymore cheap shoes!

We walked up to the little church on the hill.

Ready for Sunday service.

View looking back into town.

We were just wandering around, and we walked by an open door. Ruth peeked in and said "oh, this looks interesting"!

It was the Museo de Arte Popular. Free admission, and a guided tour (tips appreciated) and we were the only ones there.

Our guide Sara was really good, and although she only spoke Spanish, she was very patient with us, and we understood quite a lot. I think she was impressed with our knowledge of Mexico!

Sara, showing us a detailed map of Mexico and the various cultural differences.

These are actually quite a bit larger than they appear in the photo.

This almost life size deer is decorated with tiny beads.

And this is made with tiny seeds!

Paper mache.

This fan is made with peacock feathers.

I'm not usually one for art museums, but this type of Mexican art is really well done. I can't imagine the number of hours involved in making some of these pieces. Definitely a worthwhile stop in Valle de Bravo.

Lots going on in the main plaza.

We stopped in to have a very filling lunch of chicken enchiladas, beans, and rice.

With a glass of agua de jamaica each, the bill was 210 pesos ($14.85 CAD, $10.40 USD) for the two of us.

We had done a lot of shopping around for Ruth's insoles, and finally found them at the Soriana grocery store. At 222 pesos, they weren't cheap. But at least they would enable a couple of months (hopefully!) out of these new shoes.

Also, Soriana is having a Christmas special on booze! We stocked up on a few liters of wine, with their buy one, get 50% off the second one.

Christmas deal on wine and booze.

Back at the marina, we have new neighbors!

We met Emmanuel and Laurence and spent some time chatting. They are from France, and are on a 3 year world tour with their rig, that Emmanuel built himself. They keep a blog of their travels at Capsule 2024.

This afternoon, we take the bus to Toluca, spend the evening and overnight at friends Paco and Oti, then we are up at silly o'clock to fly to Cancun where we will meet daughter Lindsey and grandkids Cameron and Sadie. We are excited to see them!

Next blog post coming to you from Cancun airport!

  1. That deer is amazing - how are the beads attached? Sewn on? Glued on?

    1. It really was! They even had a small video about the artist with the deer that told about the different meanings of the pictures/objects on the deer. The beads ar attached with wax. Wax is spread on the deer and then a few beads are strung on a thin wire and dropped onto the was one at a time and pressed into the wax gently.

  2. That Mexican folk art museum is fabulous! I just loooove that kind of thing. Fine art museums are not my thing, but folk art is another matter entirely. So beautiful, colorful, and unique. Good luck with the insoles!

    1. We agree, we aren't into art museums, especially modern art museums but this one was excellent. Sara was great at explaining the different art forms and where the objects were from and some of the meanings behind the objects. We also love the bright colourful art in Mexico and all the detail that goes into the work, it really is amazing.

    1. It was a pretty neat looking rig but also very cramped feeling and we thought Igor was small. It is definitely nice that they have 4 wheel drive though, that is something we would have liked to have had but it comes with a much bigger price tag than what we were willing to spend.
