Down to the coast of Michoacan, Mexico

We tried to get going by 9:00am, but it was almost twenty after by the time we pulled out from Sue and Roy's place at Valle de Juarez. We had a great week with them while Igor was getting his top painted. Thanks for putting up with us!

We headed into Mazamitla to fill Igor's fuel tank at 24.70 pesos ($1.75 CAD) per liter. That's about $4.61 USD per gallon.

Thankfully, Igor would get better than normal fuel mileage because a lot of the 246 km (153 mile) drive was downhill, as we were going from 6,500' altitude down to the coast at sea level.

This is where we are headed!

It didn't take long before the drive got interesting. The road coming down from Mazamitla is a curvy two lane road. Just a few miles after we got out of town, traffic came to a complete stop. There was a police guy warning traffic to slow down. We guessed that there might be a bad accident up ahead. After 10 minutes or so, the guy behind me got out of his car and walked up ahead to see what the problem was, and a couple of others did the same thing. They came back after a while and started turning themselves around. We never asked, but it seemed that it was going to be a long wait!

Eventually, we managed to get turned around as well. We thought we might have to take the longer route down to Lake Chapala, but a couple of hundred meters back up the road there was a dirt road that looked like it might bypass the accident. I pulled over to check the map, and as I did so we saw a few others head down that dirt road.

But most of it was just a single lane. And once we started down it, we found that there was oncoming traffic that was also trying to avoid the accident in the opposite direction!

It was a little tight trying to get by some of the oncoming traffic!

The whole detour with the wait time probably cost us about 45 minutes. Not that we were in a rush.

Scenery along the way.

More scenery.

In the town of Villa de Contla.

This is a sugar cane growing area.

Lots of loaded sugar cane trucks.

Another one.

And another.

We got on the cuato (toll highway) towards Colima City.
It passes by the Colima Volcano.

We crossed into the state of Colima.

We bypassed Colima City, and made our way to Tecoman where we followed the coast south.

And we entered the state of Michoacan.

Lots of bananas being grown down here.

Our first view of the ocean!

We stopped at a roadside viewpoint for a photo.

We passed by a cabalgata going the opposite way.

A cabalgata is a small parade of horses and riders. This one had live music being played by a group in a trailer.

Some kind of hawk. He wouldn't turn his head around!

Arrived at Rancho B RV Park just after 3:00pm.

Barb and Mark have bought some of the property here and it includes a few RV sites.

They have a nice view of the sea.

There are a few other RV'ers here, most of them from Canada.

Another section of the park. These two are staying all season.

We are parked up with Barb and Mark.

Barb and Mark were with us on the Mexico RV Caravan tour we did to the Yucatan in January through March of 2018. Their son Shawn is here with them as well right now.

We went to a local spot for dinner.
Ruth, Mark, Barbara, Shawn, and Kevin.

Yummy!

Back home around dusk.

Sunset.

We sat out on their patio for a while.
Surprisingly, there were very few bugs.

But there were lots of stars!

We're going to hang out here for a couple or three nights before heading north up to Melaque.
