Whiskey was our family pet. She pretty much grew up with our kids, and she had been part of our family since she was 8 weeks old.
We had just entered Mexico in 2011 when Whiskey passed away at age 15 1/2. We buried her here at the Hacienda Contreras Campground on the outskirts of Valle de Juarez.
At the time, we wanted to mark the spot where she was buried, so we planted a small bottle brush tree. We've been back to visit the tree several times, and it sure has grown over the years.
So this afternoon, we walked over with Aron and Owenita to visit Whiskey's tree, and show them where we used to camp. (The campground is no longer used as a campground).
The entranceway to the campground.
Wow, considering this was not much more than a cornfield when they started the campground (in 2007, I think) the vegetation sure has grown! All of the plants and trees in the above photo were planted around 2007.
Ruth, with Whiskey's tree in 2012.
The tree had grown a lot by 2018.
We visited again in 2019.
And now, in 2025!
In the evening, we went out for supper again. Chema's restaurant in town does fantastic garlic shrimp. Of course it's been five years since we've seen him, although Aron and Owenita, and Roger and Mona were here three years ago. It was great to see him again, and even better to have a nice meal of shrimp and salad and rice for only 230 pesos ($16 CAD, $11 USD) each.
Today is market day!

Whiskey's tree looks great - can't believe how much it has grown!
ReplyDeleteIt does look great, we were really happy to see that it was still there and still doing so well.
Deletei recall following your blog with Whiskey. It was what inspired us to the RV life. Rving allowed us to take our dogs and enjoy life the way we want. You will recall Soleil who passed and was buried in Cabri Park, Sask. Which opened the door to Maggie our miniature pincher who we got while at Cabri Park and became international when we took her on your 2018-19 caravan to Mexico. For us Rving allowed the travel while keeping the love of dogs. So thank you Kevin, Ruth and Whiskey.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that we were able to inspire you both, it makes us happy to know how much traveling you have both been able to do because of us.
DeleteYes, we certainly remember Soleil and were sorry for you both when she passed away but then we remember you bringing Maggie back to the campground, she was such a cute little puppy and boy the kids ever love to play with her.
We were also so surprised to hear that you had wanted to come on our caravan trip and when you did we saw how much you both really enjoyed it. It was great to have you come along with us and it was our pleasure to show you some of the country that we love so much.
