Free camping at Tenacatita Beach

Tenacatita is a beautiful bay with a tumultuous history.

Back in 2010, the entire beach was shut down and many buildings were demolished due to a property dispute. Land owners (some American and Canadian) were evicted from properties they thought they owned outright.

The entrance road to Tenacatita remained blocked off and guarded for almost five years before a lawsuit settlement put the property into the hands of the public. The beach was reopened in 2015.

If you click to make the photo full screen, you can see Igor on the far right.

Before we left Melaque we had to pick up a few groceries.

Ruth, with her bag of eggs.
You buy them by weight. You need to be careful getting them home!

Highway 200 is the main coastal highway.

The road is paved to the beach, but then becomes a narrow dirt road.

There are several free camping possibilities along this road. Some people have moved in semi permanently, but overall there are less RV's here than I was expecting. I parked up at what might be a suitable spot, then I went for a walk to see if there was anything better. Ruth remained with Igor.

Not a bad free camping spot!

An abandoned house.

Looks like it was a nice enough place at one time.

I walked all the way to the far end.

Looking back.

But the problem with the spot we had been in was that there was absolutely no shade. So we moved to another spot where there was a palapa we could use.

Right beside the road, but there is very little traffic.
Maybe five vehicles went by the whole time.

View out our side door.

Our shade palapa.

Not a bad way to waste the afternoon.

Beach happy hour with backgammon!

We had a totally peaceful night.

Going for a walk around the bay this morning, then headed further north. One more stop to break up the drive, then Puerto Vallarta tomorrow!

  1. That looks so nice. Love the shade palapa! A must in the heat and sunshine. Enjoy!

    1. It was definitely a very nice beach area as well as free camping but the sand fleas/no see ums sure had a feast with us. The heat and the bugs are what put us off of beaches unfortunately and we have pretty well had our fill. We are good for about two weeks at the beach and I think we are only just over a week and we are already wanting to get back into the mountains.

    2. Oh, I do hear you! Not all beaches are bad for sand fleas, but some surely are. They are the worst, and I don't blame you for wanting to leave. I enjoy walking on the beach, but only during the off-season when the bugs aren't bad. Give me the mountains the rest of the time too!

    3. Beaches are nice but give us the mountains any day.
