Out exploring with Lorne and Sue

Yesterday, our friends Lorne and Sue drove down from their winter hideaway in La Penita about an hour and a half north of here.

Just to give you some background, Lorne and Sue were readers of this blog, and they contacted us way back in 2016 because we were going to be passing through Manitoba and they had just sold their house and bought a motorhome.

So we stopped in to say hello for a couple of nights. You can read about that here.

Then we saw them again on Christmas Eve 2017 at Magnolia Beach, Texas. And again a couple of weeks later in January of 2018. We've kept in touch, but that was the last time we saw them.

They keep a blog at A Place Called Away.

Anyhow, they picked us up around 9:30am and came into the park for a few minutes to meet Igor. Then we set off back through the city to a spot at the other side of the airport that had been marked on Google Maps as "Crocodile Viewing Area"

And sure enough, there were crocodiles... big ones!

They are so prehistoric looking.

This was a big fat one!

Look at those nice white teeth,

If anyone is in the Puerto Vallarta area, it's worth a stop. Located at GPS 20.672109, -105.270218

From there, we continued down the road to Boca de Tomate beach and went for a stroll on the beach...

Boca de Tomate Beach.

We walked until we got a view looking back at Puerto Vallarta.

There are a lot of big palapa restaurants here that are probably busy with locals on Sundays.

From there, we continued north up to another beach at Playa Destiladeras. I had been in touch with Doug and Judy, a blog reading couple from North Bay, Ontario who are spending a couple of months in nearby La Cruz. And they had invited us to stop by and say hello if we were in the area. So we did!

Arriving at the Destiladeras Beach Club and Restaurant.

It was actually kind of funny, but we had a feeling this place was going to be expensive. Anytime you see the words "beach club", you can add on a few pesos. Something like the word "boutique" when it comes to hotels. Or "fusion" when it comes to restaurants.

They wanted 100 pesos just to park! I asked the Spanish speaking guy at the entrance if there was anywhere to park, and he said sure, just park on the street! It was only 100 meters away. Too funny.

So we sat and chatted for an hour, but we didn't stay for anything to eat. I think the cheapest meal was 320 pesos ($22 CAD, $15.50 USD). But we enjoyed the break and meeting some blog readers.

We carried on north towards Sayulita and along the way we passed by a little street food stand that had chicken on the grill. There were only locals eating there, and we know that those are the best types of places. We shared a whole chicken with tortillas, salad, and rice. The entire bill for the four of us with two drinks included was 270 pesos ($18.75 CAD, $13.15 USD)! That's more our style.

Delicious!

No need to stop into Sayulita because we've been there before (a long time ago!) and we've read that it's gone downhill with over tourism since. So we carried on to La Penita where Lorne and Sue have their motorhome parked overlooking the beach.

The day went by really fast! We couldn't believe it when it was time to get going. We were taking the bus back to Puerto Vallarta, so we said goodbye to Lorne and Sue (thanks for spending the day with us and doing the driving!) and walked the one km up to the bus station.

It was a little more expensive than we thought it was going to be, at 235 pesos ($16 CAD, $11.50 USD) each for the tickets back. But transportation is more expensive than it ever used to be with the price of fuel being so high here.

Arrived at Puerto Vallarta bus station at about 6:40pm and the sun was just setting. The bus station is located near the airport, so we would have had to take another bus to get closer to the center. It was another 7 kms (4.5 miles) to Igor, but we hadn't had much exercise during the day so we decided to walk it.

I had found a local restaurant online that does my favorite meal (enchiladas de pollo con salsa verde) and that's what I wanted for birthday dinner. But they are only open for breakfast and lunch! So we'll have to go there another day.

As we got closer to the park, we found a great taco restaurant. Between  the two of us we had five tacos and shared a glass of agua de jamaica and the total bill was 160 pesos ($11 CAD, $7.80 USD).

Today, we are headed to a local tianguis market. It will be interesting to see how many gringos are there, if any.
