The spectacular Mexico City Cathedral at night.
Where are Kevin and Ruth now? Mexico City.

Where are Kevin and Ruth going next? Back to San Miguel de Allende on Wednesday!

Arrived in Mexico City!

Our bus was scheduled to depart San Miguel de Allende at 9:55am, and rather than wait out front for a local bus to the bus station, we played it safe and ordered an Uber. Uber is relatively cheap in Mexico, and it cost 93 pesos ($6.65 CAD, $4.60 USD) for the ten minute ride to ensure we got to the bus station with lots of time to spare.

And it turned out great because just as we sat down in the waiting area, they called for people for an earlier bus to Mexico City that was late departing... so we immediately got up and they let us on that one. It departed at about 9:15am.

It was a bit of a milk run though, and made a scheduled 11 stops along the way, plus several unscheduled ones picking up and dropping off people. That, plus a 45 minute slowdown due to an accident, meant that we didn't arrive at the Mexico City Norte bus terminal until about 2:30pm.

We hadn't had any lunch yet, so quickly found a street food stand and ordered a couple of chicken huaraches.

Lunch! They were huge, and delicious!

The problem though, was that it was now almost 3:00pm and we were meeting friends for dinner at 6:00pm, so although we were starving, we really shouldn't have eaten so much.

It was less than 5 kms (3 miles) to our hotel, and after sitting for all that time we were due for a walk.

Scenery along the way.

The Latino Americana Tower.

We are staying at the same hotel we stayed at when we were here at the end of November. The Mexico City MX lagunilla. Basic rooms, but clean, and with a really nice included breakfast. And the location is perfect. The price was a little higher than last time, but still a good deal at 846 pesos ($60 CAD, $42 USD) per night.

We had a little rest and a shower, then headed to meet friends Dave and Maggie for our 6pm dinner at Cafe de Tacuba. Dave is another of my group of friends who I've known since I was 16 years old.

Kevin, Ruth, Maggie, and Dave.

We had a nice dinner and then went and strolled around the central plaza. There had been a big political rally for the popular President Claudia Sheinbaum and there were still lots of protective barriers and blockades put up in the central area.

I found this photo online of what it had looked like earlier in the day...

Yikes! Glad we weren't here in the afternoon!

The Mexico City Cathedral is spectacular at night.

We've been to Mexico City six or seven times now, and there is always something new to find. I had read about a little known hotel that has a really great lobby area.

The Gran Hotel Mexico City.

Fancy elevator.

Fancy chandelier.

We went and walked outside for a bit to a spot where it would be easy for Dave and Maggie to get an Uber back to their hotel and said goodnight. A 15 minute walk for us to get back to our hotel.

Temporary barricades put up to protect important structures.

We're off to do a self guided walking tour this morning.
