Arrived in San Miguel de Allende

It was about a two and a half hour drive from Lagos de Moreno to San Miguel de Allende.

But it's not a very scenic drive until you get to the outskirts of Guanajuato. There's a lot of industrial areas, and of course we had to make our way around the big city of Leon, and the smaller city of Silao.

We set off just before 10:00am.

Igor, at the RV Parking area of Kikapu Water Park.

It wasn't long before we entered the state of Guanajuato.
Notice that traffic was fairly light.

But traffic was not light getting around the city of Leon!

Despite the heavy traffic, it moved right along and there were no slowdowns.

It's not very scenic though.

Big Mexico flag.

Looks about to crash!

There was some kind of cycling race taking place in the far lane on the opposite side.

From Silao, we got on the toll road to Guanajuato.

As I said yesterday, sometimes it makes sense to take the toll road. In this case, the toll was 38 pesos ($2.70 CAD, $1.80 USD) and it saved 15 minutes of curves on the free road.

Views from the road between Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende.

Both Guanajuato and San Miguel are busy places, so I'm always surprised that the route between the two is just a narrow two lane road and it's relatively quiet.

There are limited RV parking options in San Miguel de Allende. There is one RV Park in the center that's made for small rigs and Igor would fit, but it's relatively expensive. There is also the Hotel San Ramon on the outskirts where we have stayed before, so we think that's where we're going to leave Igor when we take the bus to Mexico City on Sunday.

But we might as well save on  one night of fees, so we headed up to the botanical garden where we know it's a peaceful night for free.

Parked at the botanical garden.

We had a nice sunset!

For a lot of reasons, San Miguel de Allende is not our favorite place in Mexico. It's expensive, there are too many gringos, and the traffic is a nightmare. A lot of people love it though, so we are not the norm.

But we are here for three reasons. Our friend Renate is here for a dental vacation, and we wanted to see her. We originally met Renate at Hacienda Contreras in Valle de Juarez more than ten years ago, and she's a long time loyal blog reader.

The second reason is friends that we met in Morocco, Gregg and Janet are also here and we're going to see them when we return from Mexico City.

And the third reason is that it's easy to get a bus from here to Mexico City, which we are doing tomorrow.

  1. Just curious about the dental vacation your friend is there for? Is she there to get dental work done and take a vacation at the same time?

    1. Yes, she was there to have some dental work done because it is cheaper to get it done here in Mexico than it is in the US and with the savings you get to enjoy a holiday here as well.
