Dolores Hidalgo

Dolores Hidalgo is known as the birthplace of Mexican Independence.

It's the place where Father Miguel Hidalgo uttered his famous cry for the independence of Mexico in the early hours of September 16, 1810, in front of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores parish church. After Mexico achieved independence, the town was renamed Dolores Hidalgo in his honor.

We parked at the big Bodega Aurrera grocery store to do some stocking up for our upcoming time away in the mountains.

We've been here several times before, and the very first time was in January 2016 with our motorhome Sherman. At that time, our friend Chris had told us that you can park at the municipal auditorium, which is also where the Civil Proteccion (Municipal Police and Ambulance) offices are located.

But we took a walk over there and the parking lot was really busy. We decided we might just stay at the Bodega Aurrera, and it was listed as a possibility on iOverlander.

We took a walk into the center of town.

This interesting facade has Father Miguel Hidalgo and the rifles, and church bells.

The actual church where Father Miguel Hidalgo did his thing.

Looks like there will be something going on in the central plaza.

There was enough of a breeze to get the big flag flying.
Temperature is about 30C (86F).

Lots of flowers in the central plaza.

Statue of Father Miguel Hidalgo.

That's a beautiful jacaranda tree.

The town of Dolores Hidalgo is also well known for its many types of ice cream, and there are a lot of sellers surrounding the central plaza. It's a bit pricey, but you really can't come to Dolores Hidalgo and not have some ice cream.

We shared a 50 peso ($3.50 CAD, $2.50 USD) small cup of
strawberry cream, and avocado.

There is another church in Dolores Hidalgo that appears to be made of the same stone as the famous church in nearby San Miguel de Allende.

The town of Dolores Hidalgo has many ceramics factories.

We got back to Igor, and the store and parking lot were really busy. I saw a municipal police truck parked and I went over and talked to the guy about staying overnight. He said we'd be better off over at the municipal auditorium!

So that's where we went, and fortunately the busy parking lot there had emptied out and there was lots of space.

In almost exactly the same spot where Sherman had parked nine years ago.

Quiet night, but it's too warm here. We're looking forward to getting up to the mountains!
