One last day in Guanajuato

We spent one last day with our friend Doug, wandering the streets of Guanajuato.

There is a lot to see in this town, and even though we've seen most of it before, it was fun having someone with us who lives here. And, we even managed to show him something new!

The city of Guanajuato is built into a very hilly area. And over the the years, there have been tunnels built, and even rivers diverted and roadways built onto the riverbeds. It's all very cool!

This used to be a river!

We had told Doug about a part of the university library that he wasn't aware of. It's a special collection of ancient books. The Armando Olivares Library is hidden away in a non-descript building, and you have to sign in and leave identification to enter.

The Armando Olivares Library.

Old books!

Each one of them has a paper tag sticking out.
These ones are from 1834.

These books are from 1737.

A fancy machine that we think keeps track of humidity?

Very old books.

From 1678!

Then there is a special room that houses the really ancient stuff, some of which dates back to the 1400's.

We headed over to a little restaurant for lunch that Doug knew of where they make the Guanajuato specialty Enchiladas Mineras.

Scenery along the way.

More scenery.

Huge plate of food for 100 pesos ($7.10 CAD, $4.95 USD). Drink included!
Ruth was the only one to finish her plate!

Then we had to work it off, so we hiked up to the El Pipila mirador for fantastic views of the city.

Then we headed back down to go for a walk along the road that used to be the river.

Fountain.

We were planning on going to Dolores Hidalgo today, and we still might but it will be later than planned. Ruth has been following a young family online who are driving around the world. They have now finished South America and are having their rig shipped to South Africa. While that is taking place, they have returned here to Guanajuato to wait things out, and we have arranged a last minute meet up for lunch.

  1. That young family will be educated like no other, witnessing the actual places where History was made.
    Stay Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.
