Of course it's been 13 years since we were there, but we figured we would go back and try to find the same place!
Coyoacan is about 13 kms (8 miles) south of here, so it's a little too far to walk. But there is a direct subway line, so we decided to travel like the locals. The Mexico City subway system is pretty easy to figure out, and we have used it before. And... it's very cheap!
They have transitioned to a re-fillable card payment, but you can still buy basic one way tickets. It costs 5 pesos (36 cents $CAD, 25 cents $USD) to enter the system. Once in the system, you can travel as much as you want until you exit the system.
But it costs 15 pesos to actually buy the payment card, and then you have to put some credit on it. So we went up to the booth to buy a couple of tickets. But they had run out! I explained that we're only here for one day, and it didn't make sense to buy the card. She called a security guy over, and they let us in for free!
Riding the subway for free.
One of the attractions of the Coyoacan area is the house that Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was living in, and where his assassination took place in 1940. We decided to see what there was to see there and if it was worth going in to.
We had a quick look at the free area, and then decided to pay the 70 pesos ($5 CAD, $3.50 USD) entrance fee to enter the house. We knew of the name "Leon Trotsky", but didn't know very much about the Russian Revolution of 1917, or the events that led up to Trotsky living in Mexico and his assassination.
Ruth, wandering the free section.
The house where Trotsky lived in Coyoacan.
The house is a museum, and is set up exactly the way it was when he was assassinated. Even his desk, they say, is left with all of the papers and books that were there the day he was killed.
This is his study, where he was killed with a blow to the back of his head with an ice axe!
One of the books on his desk.
Trotsky's grave is located on the property.
Interesting side story... Trotsky's 14 year old grandson was also living in the house when his grandfather was killed. He only just passed away in 2023 at age 97.
We actually spent about an hour and a half in there. It was pretty interesting learning about some world history that we didn't know much about.
But we were getting hungry, and the big Coyoacan market was only a half km away.
We were looking around for the same sandwich place that we had been to with Adrian 13 years ago! I pulled up a photo from our blog post at the time, and we tried to match it up with the many different food stalls in the market.
This is the place!
Ruth and Adrian back in 2012!
Notice the big sandwich in front of Ruth!
We split the meal between the two of us.
The big sandwich, with a large mixed fresh fruit salad, and a large fresh mixed fruit juice to drink cost 160 pesos ($11.40 CAD, $7.90 USD). And we were both stuffed.
We went and wandered around the market...
Then we went to the Coyoacan central plaza and church...
Strange name for a restaurant!
This building was interesting.
In the plaza.
Notice the little statue on the roof.
The eagle and the snake.
The outside of the church is not very fancy,
But the inside is!
Wow.
Back outside, there was a free dance show going on that we stood and watched for 15 minutes.
Famous statue in the park at Coyoacan.
Big pink house!
We decided to walk over the Casa de Cultura...
Scenery along the way.
Another little church.
Inside the Casa de Cultura.
They have a beautiful garden there.
Then we walked back to a different subway line to take us back to the center. Once again, they didn't have any tickets, and we were allowed in for free.
The entrance to the subway is decorated like a jungle!
This section is reserved for women and children under the age of 12.
On the subway back to the hotel.
We went out for birria (goat meat) tacos for dinner.
They were delicious. So tender!
Gotta get going! Down for a quick breakfast, then Uber to the bus station for our 5 hour bus ride back to Igor who is waiting for us at San Miguel de Allende.
