Solar panel job complete, and Ruth gets a new phone

I got up on the roof around 9:00am to finish up the work on the solar panels. I had already reported to you that I had installed the two new 100 watt panels, and they are working perfectly.

However, I had tested the old panels, and it seemed that one of them was still putting out enough that it was worthwhile to keep it... so I put it up on the roof and did a couple of tests before mounting it permanently.

And sure enough, it was worth keeping.

Igor's roof, with the two new panels in the front, and the good old panel in the back.

Reading 10.1 amps at 10:30am.

And after 12:00pm, with the sun higher in the sky I actually saw it reading 12.4 amps. With the two old panels, the highest I had ever seen it was 5.5 amps.

So we now have more than double the solar output than we have had since installing those panels back in August. Very pleased.

We were going down to meet Doug for lunch, and we stopped in to look at a cell phone that we had looked at a couple of days ago just to confirm the price wasn't associated with a contract of any kind.

And it wasn't. It just seemed like too good of a deal, but the guy said it was a liquidation, it was cash only, and they only had two left in stock.

We decided to go for it. It's from the same manufacturer as my expensive phone... Honor. It's one of their low end models, but it gets really good reviews for a budget phone. The Honor X7A.

We paid 1,650 pesos ($117 CAD, $82 USD).

I actually think it's a better phone than the last one Ruth bought that was 50% higher in cost.

With that done, we went for lunch.

Cauliflower ceviche appetizer.

Lentil flautas with beans and salad.

Ruth had the same, but with rice.

A little higher priced, at 140 pesos ($10 CAD, $7 USD) per person, but really good food and we wouldn't need much dinner.

Pink in the sky at dusk.

Our friends Gregg and Janet who we had seen last week in San Miguel were going to come and visit us here today, but unfortunately she's not feeling well and they've had to cancel. We're going to do one last wander around town to see what there is to see, and then tomorrow we're off to Dolores Hidalgo, and then the Sierra Gorda mountains.

  2. What a beautiful dusk photo! Really highlights the colors of the houses.

Were you able to lock Ruth's lost phone down so no data could be stolen. That's something I always worry about. I know Android offers this kind of security to remotely lock and remotely wipe phones, but I've never had to use it. Hope I never do!

    1. Thank you, it was a pretty sunset even though we couldn't see the best of it because a big tree blocks our view but the colours were very soft up against the houses.

My phone didn't have a SIM card in it so there was nothing that we could do. It needs either my pin number or my figure print to open the phone though and really there wasn't a lot of information on the phone that they would find helpful. I don't use the phone for any banking. I can see if anyone uses my email or facebook account on my other phone now and so far no one has tried to access either. We really aren't very worried about it.

  3. I had installed Split Loom over the wires to the Solar Panels and was surprised that it disintegrated from the Sun's UV Rays after only Four Years. After replacing the Loom, I coated them with a UV Resistant Rubber Coating and had no further issues.

    1. We are glad that the rubber coating worked for you. I think that Kevin is just going to go with the tie downs that he has been using, so far they have been working just fine.

  4. How many watts is the old one?...I have a 200 watt one on "Lucy's" roof but the world has been so nuts the last few years I haven't gotten a real read on it.

    1. The two old panel were both 100 watts each but they weren't putting out the amps that they should have been, one more so than the other. Kevin decided to keep the one that was working better than the other so technically we now have 300 watts of power on the roof although that one older panel isn't putting out the full 5.5 amps but what it does put out just helps to supplement the two new ones.
