Wandering around San Miguel de Allende

As expected, we had a peaceful nights sleep up at the botanical garden. After breakfast, we got ourselves packed up for the drive to the other side of town to the Hotel San Ramon that has an RV parking area.

There are only two RV park options in San Miguel de Allende. One is right in town located at the tennis courts. It's convenient for walking everywhere, but it's also fairly expensive. And the other is the Hotel San Ramon about 4 kms from the center of town.

The one at the tennis courts is difficult to access with larger rigs, although Igor would have fit no problem. And, we figured we would get a better deal for three days of storage at the Hotel San Ramon while we go to Mexico City.

We stopped at the overlook for a view of the city.
Notice the famous church on the right.

It sure is growing!

The main road outside the Hotel San Ramon is under serious construction. No problem getting Igor in, however we would normally walk the 4 kms to town, but in its current state it wouldn't be a very enjoyable walk. No problem, we can take the local bus, and taxis are quite cheap here as well.

We've stayed here several times in the past, including once with our RV caravan group.

Normal nightly rate is now 410 pesos ($29 CAD, $20 USD) per night with hookups. But we don't need any hookups. We made a deal for half price for a five night stay taking into account that we weren't going to be here for three of the nights. That's actually better than I was expecting since 24 hour parking in a secure lot in town would have been 300 pesos a night.

There is a big German registered rig here, as well as several others.

At 11:30am we walked to the road out front to wait for the bus. I had checked Uber, and it would have been 80 pesos ($5.60 CAD, $4 USD). But the bus came within five minutes and it was only 8 pesos each.

And then we walked to our friend Renate's hostel to meet up with her.

The street where Renate's hostel is.

Where is everybody?

Fancy doorway.

We first met Renate at Hacienda Contreras RV park in Valle de Juarez about 13 years ago. At the time, she was 70 years old and traveling alone through Mexico in her small Class A motorhome. We thought that was pretty adventurous, but we have met several single women traveling alone throughout the years, so it can definitely be done!

We walked through the touristy artisan market to get to the main market.

Stuff for sale at the artisan market.

We wanted some lunch, but San Miguel is fairly pricey when it comes to restaurants. However we know that you can always get a good meal at a good price at the local market, and we were not disappointed!

I had the enchiladas verde.
110 pesos ($7.80 CAD, $5.45 USD) for this big plate of food!

Ruth had the enchiladas roja.

The menu.

This is where we ate.
It was delicious and we were stuffed!

We went and sat in a local park for an hour and chatted with Renate. She's now based in Arizona, and still living in her small class A motorhome. She says she wanted to die in it! She's now 82 years old and still doing really well, but she realizes she's starting to slow down.

This young lady was celebrating her quinceañera (15th birthday) with a photo session.

Renate was just getting over a bug of some kind, and wanted a siesta... so we said our goodbyes. Really good to see her again, and we're glad we made the detour.

Ruth and I went and wandered to the central plaza.

There are a lot of different churches in San Miguel.

Scenery along the way.

Pedestrian street.

You can't go to San Miguel and not get a photo of the famous church.

Ruth dragged me into the cultural center where they had some weird art on display. I have zero interest in this stuff, and Ruth normally doesn't either, but she says you never know when you might see something interesting. I took some photos so you can see what we saw.

I don't get it.

The building was more interesting than the art.

Ruth at the Casa de Cultura.

Hm. Okay.

How would you like this hanging on your living room wall?

They did have a photography exhibit that was not bad.

I liked this one.

We decided to walk to the main bus station just to confirm that we knew where we had to go for this morning's bus to Mexico City. And, I had bought the tickets online and just wanted to double check that everything was in order... and it was.

More scenery along the way.

We popped into a very nondescript looking liquor store just to have a look and see what they've got. And they've got a lot!

This is the place!
Canal #112, Zona Central.

What a cool store!

Guitar shaped bottle of bourbon.

They had a lot of stuff!

Worth a visit if you're in San Miguel de Allende.

We went to where we thought we had to wait for the bus back to Igor, but we waited quite a while and it never came. We were hot and tired and losing patience, so we ordered an Uber.

Today, we take the bus to Mexico City for a three day vacation! Back to Igor on Wednesday.
