What a disappointment.

Sorry this is late! We wanted to get a decently early start, and I had some computer work to do first thing, so we just decided to put off the blog post. Anyhow, here it is!

On Thursday, we drove from the overnight spot at the dam up to the small city of Lagos de Moreno.

We stuck to the back roads the entire drive. It's so much more interesting than the toll roads, and of course free as well. Sometimes it makes sense to take the toll roads, but often it doesn't.

Entrance to a town along the way.

The roads were very quiet.

Just us and the farmers.

Notice the two guys sitting up on top of the garbage truck.

The town of Yahualica has a modern looking bull ring.

The town of Yahualica was set down in a valley and looked really interesting and we should have stopped somewhere and walked in. Oh well. Next time!

Interesting entrance way.

We did have a half hour or so of really bad roads!

We stopped for lunch at a big gas station. We were parked off to the side, out of the way, and a municipal police truck pulled up. The two guys asked if we had had any problems in the area, and I said no, it's been very peaceful. Then, he wanted to see my passport, and then my drivers license. It was all a bit odd. But then at the end, he said everything is in order, and we shook hands and I thanked them for their security. He made a point of showing me his identification as well, and I know that there have been reports of fake police, so that was reassuring. Anyhow, it just seemed a bit random since we weren't even driving. Oh well.

But there wasn't much traffic.

Scenery along the way.

Table mountain?

Pistachios for sale.

The only reason we wanted to come to Lagos de Moreno was to visit the RV Park at the Kikapu Water Park.

What a disappointment.

I remember reading about this park when it opened, probably ten years ago. Forty sites, 30 amp service, full hookups. It sounded great! Not that we need any of those things, but when we were leading RV Caravans, these types of services are hard to come by in Mexico.

And, it was located at a water park, which makes for a great diversion.

The RV Park at Kikapu Water Park.

The cost is pretty good, at 400 pesos ($28.40 CAD, $19.75 USD) per night, including two person admission to the water park.

But at this time of year, and especially during the week, the water park is 75% closed up. There is one slide, and one pool available. I didn't even take any photos.

And the RV Park is just a big parking lot... with very little shade. And like a lot of things in Mexico... it was built ten years ago, and hasn't had much maintenance. So some of the electrical outlets and water taps didn't work. In fact we turned on one tap to get some water and couldn't get it to shut off!

The bathroom facilities were also poorly maintained. However, they do have a comfortable looking clubhouse room for the RV'ers.

Anyhow, we probably wouldn't have stayed and paid the 400 pesos because it would have been pretty easy to find somewhere to park for free. But, it had been a fairly long driving day (by our standards!) and we just felt like staying put.

Oh... there was one other RV there... a single girl (maybe late 30's) from Germany driving a big American crew cab dually pickup truck with a big truck camper on the back with Montana plates. Good for her! She said she is missing Germany, is tired of being lonely, and is going to sell it and fly back home. Interesting.

Totally quiet night, and Friday morning we are off to the popular town of San Miguel de Allende.

Nice price drop on the Apple Watch Series 10.

And in Canada...

  1. Me thinks the Mexican police are checking to see if Americans are in their country and to boot them out. I don't blame them haha. I agree with the single girl RVer. I'd get lonely, miss home and want to go home. There's only so much I can take traveling...then I want to get home. I recently traveled with my daughter for two weeks and we both agree two weeks was enough lol. I think I like other people sharing their travel experiences better.

    1. Lol, who knows but we highly doubt that was the case but then maybe they were looking for illegals, we are sure there are some in the country.

Agreed, we think that it would be more lonely travelling by yourself, we are lucky that we both enjoy traveling together. We are glad that you enjoy reading about our travels, then. :-)

  2. That's why we shied away from rv parks in Mexico. We stayed in a few but overall there was nothing to write home about. Parking lot, dirt pad, whatever the case may be, they usually have bad electric and sewage. Good for overnight to do laundry, dump and fill water but other than that, just not worth it.

    1. Sometimes it is just nice to stay in a park and know that you aren't going to have any issues with someone knocking on your door at night but we have to admit we feel the same way as you, having said that there are a few parks that we don't mind spending time at. The water park wouldn't have been so bad if they had only discounted the full price because only part of the park was open for use.
