When we bought Igor, he had not been well maintained. I'm guessing he hadn't had anything done for probably ten years or more.
So there has been a lot of catching up to do on some of that stuff, and we think we're really close to having the mechanical work as good as it gets. We really want him to be in tip top condition for when we enter Central America this coming winter. The rear brakes will have to be done before we leave Mexico, but they are fine for now.
The only other major item is the shock absorbers. He drives fine on the highway, but cornering and driving slowly on really bumpy roads he doesn't handle so well because he's a bit top heavy. We've known this for a while, and I've done the research into what shocks to get. And the group that I belong to highly recommends a specific shock absorber and they say they make a difference of night and day.
The problem is those shocks that I want aren't cheap... and they're not easily available in Mexico.
Fancy new Bilstein Shocks.
When we were in Guanajuato visiting our friend Doug, we tried to order these shocks from the U.S., but only the fronts were available. I see them advertised in Mexico, but at a ridiculous price. Like over $250 USD each. In the states, you can buy the whole kit of 4 shocks for about $400 USD plus tax and shipping, but they won't ship to Mexico, and shipping to Canada is ridiculous.
I found an online supplier in Canada who has free shipping within Canada, and the price is really good by Canadian standards. The entire bill is $741 CAD ($534 USD) including tax.
We've confirmed that we will be back at our annual housesit in Manotick (Ottawa), Canada for the month of September, and the homeowner will hold anything that we have shipped there. Then when we return to Mexico in early October, we'll bring them with us. At least the labor to get them changed will be cheap.

And in Canada...
I run Bilstein shocks on my half tin and swear by them.
ReplyDeleteThat is good to hear! Everything that Kevin has read about them say the same thing. We are looking forward to getting them installed on Igor in October when we return to Mexico.
