Damian Carmona was a famous Mexican soldier in the 1800's who fought during the French invasion. He survived a grenade attack and was awarded honors for remaining at his post, only to die from typhoid two years later at the age of 24.
The town is obviously named after him.
There is an old ruins by the plaza.
It's a little overgrown!
No idea what it was. Some kind of mill maybe.
Big tree in the middle of the road.
Guadalupe statue built into the tree.
Old log cabin.
There is lots of water and pipes running everywhere.
Nice little town. Guaranteed this little place doesn't see very many gringo tourists. Everybody very friendly though. We were walking down one of the side roads where a guy yelled out in perfect Texas English "how y'all doin'?" So we stopped to talk to him and his wife. They live in Texas, but are down here visiting relatives for Semana Santa.
We stopped in the little fruit and veggie store to pick up a few things. Then saw an ice cream shop where we bought a couple of "paletas" (popsicles) and sat and watched the world go by.
Back at our day use area, we spoke to the owner about staying until next Monday. That would make it a full ten days. We're paying 200 pesos ($14 CAD, $10 USD) per night, which I know is not much money, but normally there is a discount for longer stays. Certainly if you stay a week or more. Anyhow, this guy wouldn't budge at all.
We had already paid for three nights, and we paid for three more. We'll see how we feel after that. It's likely we'll end up paying 200 pesos a night where ever else we go, unless we boondock somewhere. But we've got the big Tamul waterfalls that we want to see and it's not that far away and we didn't want to get there until after Semana Santa.
Anyhow, we'll play it by ear.
One of the two suspension bridges we have to cross to get to town.
Ruth with her feet in the water.
She was letting the fish nibble at her feet.
